What to do if you are involved in an accident
Stay Calm
Try and remain as calm as possible, this will reduce stress levels keeping you in control.
Notify the Police
This is advisable and they will tell you if they need to attend the incident.
Obtain Third Party Details
- Drivers Name, Address
- Vehicle Owner’s Name, Address (vehicle may be company owned)
- Contact Number
- Vehicle Details; Make, Model, Colour & Registration Number
Take a note of all relevant information
Exact location, Time, Date, Independent witness details, Weather and road conditions, Emergency services attending (e.g. Police Officer I.D.)
Top Tip - Make a note of any pre-existing damage to third party vehicles (the other party may attempt to claim for this)
Take Pictures
It is a really good idea to always keep a camera in your vehicle. Taking pictures at the scene of an accident can provide vital evidence when your insurers are dealing with your claim in deciding who is responsible.

Other useful information
Any damage to or loss of your load will be dealt with by your Goods In Transit Insurers. This includes Removal of Debris, Transhipment of your load to another vehicle if your vehicle is no longer road worthy.
Claims for damage to Containers (not owned by you), Tarpaulins, Sheets, Ropes, Chains and similar should also be directed to the Goods In Transit insurer.
Most Comprehensive policies provide unlimited windscreen cover and are subject to a policy excess. Where the windscreen can be repaired rather than replaced insurers usually waive the policy excess.
