Spotlight on BIBA – Our Scheme Partner for Transport and Business Insurance

Many people have seen BIBA's lion logo on an insurance broker’s website, but not everyone knows what it stands for. The British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) is the UK’s leading trade body for insurance brokers, representing thousands of firms across the country and promoting fair, professional, and client-focused insurance practices.
At Ratcliffes Insurance Brokers, we are proud to work in partnership with BIBA as its official Scheme Provider for Transport Insurance, delivering specialist cover designed for couriers, hauliers, fleet operators, and logistics SMEs across the UK. We are also exploring opportunities to further develop our collaboration with BIBA to support even more areas of business in the future.
A Brief History of BIBA
BIBA was formed in 1977 when the UK Government, through the Department of Trade and Industry, encouraged the insurance industry to create a single representative body for brokers. Today, it has over 1,800 regulated member firms, contributing around 1% of the UK’s GDP and arranging approximately 67% of all general insurance, a total premium spend of around £65 billion, and 81% of all commercial insurance (1).
Over the decades, BIBA has worked alongside government departments, regulators, and insurers to ensure brokers, and by extension their clients, are treated fairly and have access to clear, professional advice. It has been instrumental in shaping industry standards, promoting ethical conduct, and advocating policies that keep insurance affordable and accessible.
BIBA’s Modern Role
Today, BIBA continues to act as the voice of the UK broking sector, engaging with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and policymakers to ensure proportionate regulation and client protection.
In 2025, for example, BIBA welcomed FCA proposals to simplify insurance rules and reduce unnecessary compliance burdens on smaller brokers, reflecting BIBA’s long-standing calls for balanced regulation. It also published open letters to government ministers and research reports urging restraint on Insurance Premium Tax (IPT), warning that higher taxes on insurance could harm small businesses and households alike.
Beyond advocacy, BIBA supports members with compliance guidance, training, and resources covering new regulations, technology, and market challenges. In 2025, it launched a national campaign featuring “Ben the Broker” to highlight the value of professional insurance advice (2) and introduced an AI guide for brokers, helping firms adopt new tools responsibly (3).
Ratcliffes and the BIBA Partnership
Ratcliffes’ partnership with BIBA reflects our deep experience in the transport and commercial insurance sectors. As BIBA’s official Scheme Provider for Transport Insurance, we provide exclusive access to tailored policies for:
-
Goods in Transit Insurance
-
Hire and Reward Motor Insurance
-
Fleet and Haulage Cover
-
Public and Employers’ Liability Insurance
Every year, we also attend the BIBA Conference, the largest insurance broking conference in the world (with around 10,000 delegates in 2025). It is a valuable opportunity to connect with industry peers, insurers, and policymakers, helping us stay ahead of emerging trends and bring the latest insights back to our clients.
As we continue to expand our scheme partnership with BIBA, we are developing solutions that go beyond transport, offering enhanced support for group personal accident and other specialist insurance products to help protect businesses and their people.
Looking Ahead
As the insurance landscape evolves, with electric vehicles, AI-driven logistics, and new compliance requirements, BIBA continues to represent brokers and clients, ensuring practical, forward-looking protection.
At Ratcliffes, our collaboration with BIBA keeps us at the forefront of these changes, so we can continue delivering insurance solutions that meet the real needs of businesses across multiple sectors.
Trusted by over 300 UK brokers and intermediaries, Ratcliffes is proud to represent the standards, expertise, and commitment that BIBA stands for.
